Our Fifth Birthday
The Party kicked of with a boom with many residents and guests now hungrily digging into the food, which had been prepared for the celebration. With promise of a musical night with help from the “Urban Freestyle Crew” spirits were high.
The“Urban
Freestyle Crew” had played for the Quay Foyer before
and therefore was welcomed back. And as they set up, challengers eagerly
awaited there time to shine. The music that the “Urban Freestyle
Crew” played
was good, until they decided to humour someone but putting on a few tracks
from a residents CD, which proved to instantly get complaints of bad
music taste. So was quickly removed for the party to continue.
All
in all the day went without a hitch, and the residents and guests
had been able to talk
to each other and
find out the various
questions that had
been burning in their minds since the speeches. After the food was all gone,
the refreshments drunk, and the guests long since departed. The Quay Foyer
returned to normal, well as normal as the Foyer gets anyway……….

We started off in the playground waiting for the missile carrier that would carry us over the assault course. Not just the once but a few times!! A very bumpy ride, but they had pre-warned us and gave us safety rules that meant we wouldn’t fall out or lose limbs!! After, our guide took us on a tour of the tank museum. Giving a history of the items as we walked through the bunker area and town area, which were set out as they would have been during wartime with sound effects included!! They had variations of English bunkers and German bunkers and told us how the English would move around from bunker to bunker. Whereas, the Germans would stay in one bunker and defend it. Tanks, tins of food, clothes and sweets that would have been used and eaten in those days as well as dummies made up as casualties and nurses from that time all aimed to take you back to wartime days. We then walked through the rest of the museum with our guide. They had different sections in the museum for World War 1 and World War 2 and had German tanks as well as British. Tanks have been donated to them over the years. Some tanks you can go in and have a look inside.-Upstairs they had all the weaponry, guns, landmines, rocket launchers. They also had many items and tanks from modern times, Desert Storm, they also had tank that was used in Tianneman Square. Afterwards we were invited to give our view of what we thought of the museum and how we thought they could make it better. For more information on how to get to the tank museum, opening times and ticket prices call General Enquiries(01929) 405096 or visit their website: www.tankmuseum.co.uk by Antony Gale August 2004 top QF Magazine Issue 14 of the QF Magazine is out now. Football and the Foyer is open to residents, ex-residents and non-residents. If you are a young person interested in taking part, whether you live in the foyer or not, then contact Tracy at the foyer for more details. Tel: (01202) 463603 top Poetry Workshop Recently we had the pleasure of a poet running a poetry workshop at the foyer as part of the national book festival. Three of our young people took up the challenge of stretching their brains to unimaginable areas!! They then recited their poems in the 'sunny grassland' of Poole Park and were filmed by members of the Poole Arts Council who set up the workshop. The video was shown among other 'budding poets' successful poems at the Study Gallery in Poole. top Focus Group Residents at the foyer are to be given the opportunity to experience and partake in different activities that focus on self development. A programme of activities that focus on self-awareness, confidence and relaxation is to be made possible with funding from the Local Network Fund. Activities are to include martial arts / yoga, dance and drama, counselling skills, mentoring skills and neuro linguistic programming. A group of paid tutors and volunteers will be running the workshops which vary from single 1 hour workshops to eight week 2 hour workshops. The programme will run until November next year and those completing workshops such as the counselling and mentoring skills will be volunteering their skills for their colleagues in other areas of the foyer. These will include using their skills as part of the 'buddy' mentoring system that we will be introducing for new residents and also as mentors on our basic skills and web design courses. The 'Focus' committee, made up of residents who expressed an interest in the project would like to thank the Local Network Fund for their support which they have also given in the past for the QF Magazine. top |
